Your courier insurance questions answered

[+] Why has the cost of courier insurance increased so much?

The price of motor insurance in general has slowly increased over the last 12 months.

Several insurers have experienced high claims ratios in the courier insurance sector, forcing them to drive the rates up or withdraw from the market altogether.

As a specialist courier insurance broker, we work hard to negotiate exclusive deals with insurers and are confident that our prices are some of the best available.

[+] Does my courier insurance policy allow me to visit Europe?

We understand that delivering goods into Europe can be lucrative for a significant number of couriers.

Our courier insurance policies can include up to 90 days in EU countries in any one period of insurance. At the present time, we will require full details of each trip, including dates, driver information, the type of goods being carried and confirmation of which countries will be visited.

If you need longer than 90 days, or are visiting countries outside the EU, speak to one of our courier insurance experts and we will do what we can to meet your needs.

[+] I've just passed my driving test - can I still get courier insurance?

At the moment, our courier insurance policies are available to people who have held a full UK driving licence for a minimum of two years.

[+] I don't have a van - can I cover my car to be used for courier purposes?

As a commercial motor insurance specialist, we would expect couriers to use a van rather than a car, although we do appreciate that some small package delivery drivers can easily use a car to conduct their business.

At the present time, we do not cover cars for courier use.

[+] Can I transfer my No Claims Bonus from another insurer?

Your No Claims Bonus can be transferred provided it was earned in the UK.

We will also allow generous introductory discounts if you have earned a No Claims Bonus on another vehicle but do not wish to transfer.

Additionally, if you do not have a No Claims Bonus but have been driving as a courier for a number of years and can prove this by way of a letter from a current or former employer, we will allow the equivalent No Claims Bonus. This can amount to a discount of up to 65%.

[+] What other policies will I need in addition to courier insurance?

The only legal requirements with regard to insurance in the UK is motor insurance and Employers' Liability insurance. In a nutshell, if you own or drive or vehicle, or employ anybody in any capacity, you will need insurance to satisfy the law.

However, there may be occasions where you will need extra cover to satisfy the terms of a contract, or simply want to make sure you and your business are fully protected.

As a minimum, we would recommend:

  • Goods in transit cover
  • Legal protection
  • Liability insurance
  • Breakdown cover
