Are you breaking the law without knowing it?

A new study has reported nearly half of Britons have broken the law a number of times in the past 12 months without even realising it.

The survey was carried out for crime drama TV channel Alibi, to marks it’s ‘This time it’s personal’ themed programming this week. The results of the survey revealed that out of the 3,000 people polled half of them had broken the law at least three times over the past year without even realising it.

On the road it appears 42 per cent of those polled routinely use their mobile phones whilst driving. With 12 per cent not even realising that it is illegal to use a mobile phone whilst behind the wheel.

Additional road related results include 36 per cent of people admitting to frequently parking illegally, with 6 per cent being ignorant of drink driving laws. Other figures included Brits admitting to drink driving with 28 per cent admitting to have done so five times or more.

As a leading van insurance broker Staveley Head think it would be interesting to see the results of a more widespread survey, with just the result of 3,000 people polled being quite shocking.

Half of Britons also thought that there are too many laws and four in ten said they would be prepared to break a law if they knew they would not be caught.

Channel head Steve Hornsey said:

“These shocking statistics show that even with the best intentions many people cross the line in breaking the law.”
