Motorists have been warned to be extra vigilant following a spate of thefts of catalytic converters in Hertfordshire.
Police said vans appear to be the main targets but it has affected all types of vehicles.
In response to the crimes, which have happened at all times of day and night, a specialist taskforce has been set up by officers called Operation Devon.
Self-employed tradesmen could be particularly worried about the crimes because their vehicle is key to their livelihood and sorting out a van insurance claim would be the least of their worries.
Vehicles left in industrial estates are thought to be at the greatest risk. Operation Devon is particularly focusing its efforts on cross-border criminals from outside Hertfordshire.
Officers are also collaborating with scrap metal dealers to improve the processes for accepting scrap metal.
They are also working with organisations such as Virgin Media, British Telecom, Trading Standards, EDF, and other police forces.
Detective Chief Inspector Liz Hanlon, who leads the Operation Devon team said: "Metal theft, in particular the theft of catalytic converters, is an issue across the country and, in Hertfordshire, is one we are working hard to tackle under 'Operation Devon'."
She added: "Residents and local businesses can help too by reporting any suspicious behaviour in progress in their neighbourhood to police via 999 - with catalytic converter theft in particular, look out for people hanging around vehicles at unusual times and make sure you make use of your drive or a garage if you have one.
"We're also experiencing a rise in theft of number plates generally and theft of tools from vans so the message extends to everyone to be vigilant, secure your vehicles and report suspicious activity straight away."
Paul Cartwright, executive director of insurance broker Staveley Head: "This is an increasing problem, accounting for a significant percentage of motor insurance claims. Vans are a prime target for this type of theft due to a higher ground clearance, giving thieves easier access to the underside of the vehicle.
"Drivers do indeed need to be vigilant and take steps to reduce the risk."
