Taxi rank set to ease traffic chaos in Wales

25 May 10

Cardiff taxi drivers are pleased that the plans for a taxi rank on Mermaid Quay are well underway. Staveley Head, a leading provider of taxi insurance for over 15 years, feels any improvements to taxi services in Wales is great news.

Having battled for a number of years, taxi drivers will welcome the news of plans to put a taxi rank at the waterfront venue. With local member consultations having been held and the traffic regulation order with the council’s legal team, notices will be advertised on site for 21 days to allow for objections. Should there be no objections the order for the taxi rank will be sealed.

This has always been a troublesome spot for taxi drivers and buses, and Police Constable Gareth Price also expressed his concern for the safety of people enjoying a night out in Cardiff Bay. According to Price, dozens of taxis choke Bute Street when they are queuing to pick up revellers.

He also commented:
“People are coming out of pubs and staggering across the road.  It’s getting to the stage where we fear an injury or worse.”

Mathab Khan, chairman of Cardiff Hackney Association added drivers would like the rank to be at least six car lengths long and to be on the Tesco side of the road to prevent customers having to dash across the road. The head of service delivery Simon Mohammad also confirmed that the area has been identified as potentially hazardous for our buses, adding:

“We are happy to co-operate with any plans to make travel safer for our drivers and customers.”
