A new angle on speeding

26 May 10

Motorists driving through Bedfordshire should be aware of the new set of eyes keeping a check on their speed.

New speed camera vans that are now on the streets of Bedfordshire are equipped with not one, but four cameras. The new vans can now cover the front, sides and back of the van unlike the traditional vans that only cover the rear.

With numerous drivers escaping speeding fines due to not being able to establish who the driver was, the vans can get a picture from three different angles to ensure the identity of the driver. Motorbike riders are also set to be caught out after escaping being captured due to their rear mounted plates.

At a cost of £28,000 to convert the vans, the ‘Command vans’ as they are known, allow traffic to be monitored from up to a kilometre in each direction by one operator.

As one of the UK’s leading insurance brokers for van insurance, Staveley Head appreciate the vans are top of the range and will prevent people from speeding. However, can see the issues with the amount of money being spent on converting these vans.

In response to the new ‘Command vans’, motoring organizations hit out at the force for wasting public money. Roger Lawson, a spokesman for the Association of British Drivers said:

“Statistically the idea that speed cameras stop speeding is a load of cobblers, they are just a way of raising revenue. This kind of investment is a waste of money. They should be scrapping vans rather than improving them.”

Hoping to deter motorists in the first place a spokesperson from Bedfordshire Police said:
“It's all about keeping our roads safe and deterring hazardous behavior that puts lives at risk. We don't measure our success in terms of an increase in the number of people detected speeding. We don't want to catch people, we want people to slow down.”
