A lorry driver who obliviously drove at 60mph with a Renault Clio trapped to the front of his tanker has appeared before North West Traffic Commissioner Beverly Ball. At the hearing John Tomlinson, the lorry driver involved in the incident, was told he can keep his licence.
On the 13th January Rhona Williams was joining the South bound carriage way of the A1 (M) at junction 44 in her Renault Clio when the incident occurred. Mr Tomlinson’s solicitor told the hearing how the slip road joins the middle lane of the motorway, so Ms Williams was effectively undertaking the 44 tonne tanker and then became attached to the tanker's bumper.
Mr Tomlinson was unaware of the Renault Clio trapped to the front of his lorry and only became aware of Ms Williams Clio when he pulled onto the hard shoulder after being signaled by another motorist.
A passenger in a passing car managed to capture video footage of the frightening incident and later posted it on YouTube receiving near half a million views.
Staveley Head, a leading HGV insurance broker, believes both drivers are extremely lucky to have escaped unhurt and feel freak accidents like this one further highlight the dangers of HGV blind spots.
The Northwest Traffic Commissioner told Mr Tomlinson she felt it entirely inappropriate for her to take away his licence and added:
“What you found when you pulled into the hard shoulder must have come as a complete shock and I think what you did, in reversing your tanker to release the Clio, was of huge credit to you.”
