IAM sends warning to motorists for the bank holiday

With many of us looking forward to the bank holiday weekend the Institute of Advanced Motorists is sending out a message to urge drivers and riders to take extra care on the roads.
With summer being a peak season for motorists to get out in the countryside, deaths and serious injuries on rural roads begins to creep up. With 45 per cent of deaths and serious injuries on rural roads occurring on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and most when the weather is fine and the roads are dry.
The warmer weather also see’s more bikers on the road therefore motorcycle road accidents also tend to increase, with more than three quarters of motorbike deaths and injuries again occurring on dry roads in fine weather.
Staveley Head the insurance broker for motorbike insurance agree motorists should take note of the IAM’s warning and take particular care on country roads they may not be familiar with.
With many hidden risks on country roads Neil Greig the IAM Director of Policy and Research said:
“Lush grass at this time of year makes it particularly difficult to see round bends, so take corners with extra care. There is bound to be lots of wildlife tearing about, so be prepared for them.”
He also added:
“Weekend riders should be aware that twice as many bikers die on rural roads than on urban roads. There are also more serious or fatal biker casualties at the weekend”
To bring the number of accidents down everyone can do their bit by sharing the roads safely over the bank holiday weekend by just taking a little more time and being more cautious on unfamiliar roads.
