Couriers With a Difference

29 May 10

At Staveley Head, one of the countries leading courier insurance specialist we like to keep ahead of the last news in the industry. Our specialist team have noticed a change over the last few months of how our couriers go about contracting their vans for use.

It used to be that client needing courier services contact various companies to get the best rate to deliver to deliver the package, however recently their has been a shift away from this idea.

Rather than ringing round for endless quotes to get a letter couriered from one end of the country to the other or even worldwide, new websites have appeared where clients can post the item the need delivering online along with a description of the item and a picture of the item and when the need the to be picked up and delivered by, then courier operators can bid on getting the job – sort of like eBay in reverse where instead of people bidding on your goods and you delivering them – people are bidding to deliver your goods.

These delivery auction sites already have courier operators flocking to sign up from small one man operations to some of the biggest names in the courier industry

Why have so many operators signed up to this innovation?

Previously many courier vans were contracted to make their drops regardless of how many items they are carrying meaning the many of the commercial delivery vans on the road were half empty. These sites give them the opportunity to make the journey they normally take more economically efficient by offering the free space they have to other clients. Creator of auction site ANYVAN, Angus Elphinstone says, “It was an easy sell to get them to sign up. They can make more money on the same route, which in this economic climate is massively beneficial”

This ‘renting’ out of the extra space in the vehicles is also seen as more environmentally friendly, as it is helping to reduce the number of vehicles on the road making deliveries which in turn is helping to reduce CO2 levels.

The idea of auctioning off courier deliveries seems to be a winner for all parties involved and consumers are saving money, with savings of up to 75 per cent on the packages they need delivering, courier companies are filling up their vehicles making their journey economically viable and the environment is having a helping hand too.
