Taxi drivers set to strike in Wales over the weekend

03 June 10

Walesonline reported today the news that some of the 950 hackney cab drivers in Cardiff are planning strike action on one of the busiest days of the year. The strike action is in protest of an anti-Muslim rally being held in the city centre.

This weekend sees the capital city flooded with tens of thousands of people due to numerous events taking place. The Stereophonics are set to play Cardiff City Stadium, Wales are taking on South Africa at the Millennium Stadium along with Glamorgan locking heads with the West Indies A at the Swalec Stadium.

A spokesperson for Welsh taxi insurance broker Staveley Head commented:

\"A combination of hot weather and frustrations for a large number of tourists stuck without transport could spell trouble.  Hopefully transport issues won\'t be as bad as originally thought.\"

The number of taxi drivers estimated to take part in the strike against the Welsh Defence League (WDL) rally, range from 80 to 700. In addition to the strikes, Cardiff Bus have not been able to confirm if they will be putting extra services on along with rail bosses warning of long queues forming at Cardiff Central Station.

Mathab Khan the concerned chairman of the Cardiff Hackney Association has warned police of the “worrying” disruption with such a large amount of sport and music fans descending on the city. Mr Khan also said as the Cardiff Hackney Association was a non-political organisation it had opted to take a neutral stance on the strike and had not encouraged or discouraged members to take part.

Speaking with taxi drivers outside Cardiff Central Railway Station Walesonline discovered a difference of opinion. One man, who did not wish to be named, said he feared he would be at risk of violence if he worked on Saturday and was therefore planning to take part in the strike.

Another driver confirmed he could not pass up the opportunity to work on the busiest day of the year.
