Buses, motorbikes, taxis and cyclists

The motorcycle trial which allows mopeds, scooters, motorcycles and tricycles (without a side car) to use London’s bus lanes is coming to an end in July, leaving bikers wondering if the trial could become permanent.

Drivers of the above vehicles have been able to use most red route bus lanes over the past 18 months alongside taxi drivers and cyclists. Against the expectations of cycle lobbyists, the majority of cyclists have been happy to share the lanes with their motorised friends.

Steve Kenward, Motorcycle Industry Association’s acting CEO said:
“Given that the July deadline is now quite close, we are surprised that the Mayor has been silent about the future of the initiative. We feel that it is important to point out that allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes is a positive step towards improving transport accessibility for London citizens and in demonstrating the positive effect that motorcycling has in reducing traffic congestion and Co2 levels."

As one of the country’s leading motorbike insurance specialists, Staveley Head feels the safety of all bikers whether motor or pedal is paramount.  If motorbikes using the bus lanes has helped to reduce rider vulnerability, it makes sense to make it a more permanent thing.

With more miles being travelled by motorcyclists throughout the capital in 2009, should the scheme become permanent it could increase motorcycle use throughout London even more, therefore helping to reduce congestion.
