The white van man has his say

07 June 10

After apparently being coined by a radio presenter in 1997 the ‘White Van Man’ became a term for reckless and rude drivers of white vans.  However, the delivery auction site anyvan.com decided to turn the tables and ask van drivers what they thought of other road users.

Staveley Head, a leading provider of van insurance, found the results of the survey a bit of fun with surprising results.

The 1st of June saw anyvan.com carry out a poll on their website to see who the worst drivers were, according to van drivers and couriers.  Female drivers came in pretty low with only 7%, motorcyclists and bus drivers were neck and neck with 15% and even cyclists only received 19% of the worst drivers vote.

So who was the worst group decided by van drivers?

Driving ahead of all motorists to claim the worst drivers on the road award are elderly drivers, clocking up a whopping 33% of the vote.

When also asked which driving habits most annoyed them ‘white van man’ gave 25% of the vote to the people who drive too slow, with people not being able to squeeze through gaps and hesitating getting 8%.

Angus Elphinstone, the founder of the delivery auction, commented on the results of the poll saying:

“White Van Man has gained a reputation over the years for being brash, short-tempered and very much the bad boy of Britain’s roads. Unfortunately it’s a reputation that has been hard to shake off”.

He also added:

“If you have experienced any of these annoying habits on the road, have you ever been short-tempered or brash to your fellow drivers? Considering van drivers and couriers have to face these situations on a daily basis, is it any wonder they have such a reputation?”

A humble 63% of van and courier drivers also admitted there are times when they regret their behavior towards other road users.  So perhaps next time you come across white van man you’ll think twice about cutting him up and know that just like you he is trying to get from A to B without too much stress.
