Black cabs are going green

08 June 10

The streets of London are set to ‘go green’ after the first zero-emission fuel cell hybrid taxi was revealed in London.

The taxis will run on a hydrogen fuel cell system which converts hydrogen into electricity and will be powered by lithium polymer batteries. No harmful gases are released; only water is emitted from the taxi’s tailpipe.

A spokesperson for Staveley Head, a leading taxi insurance specialist, commented:

"Keeping the look of the iconic black cab whilst giving it a greener way of running is a great combination."

With the ability to run 250 miles on a full tank of hydrogen taxi drivers should be able to run a full day in operation without having to refuel.  Initial plans for 6 refuelling stations throughout London are set to be in place next year where taxi drivers can fuel up in less than 5 minutes.

A city the size of London can only reap the benefits of the zero-emission taxis.  Plus, with all taxis in London set to have zero tail-pipe emissions by the year 2020 the new greener taxis are a massive step in the right direction.

London's deputy mayor for policing, and chair of the London Hydrogen Partnership, Kit Malthouse, said:

“The black cab is a much-loved London icon, but it is also a significant source of pollution, especially in the centre of the city.  This prototype Fuel Cell Black Cab, which emits only water from its tailpipe, is an exciting glimpse of how hydrogen technology could soon play a vital role in cleaning up air quality for urban dwellers.”
