DIY firm B&Q are pulling out of centres run by third parties in Coventry, Swindon, Runcorn and Chepstow, risking more than 1,000 jobs.
The restructuring plans for a new distribution centre in Swindon mean employees based in seven partner centres run by Wincanton, Kuehne and Nagel and DHL are facing the possibility of being made redundant.
HGV insurance specialist Staveley Head thinks this is quite a blow to the industry. However, with B&Q ensuring they will explore every opportunity to minimise redundancies there may still be light at the end of the tunnel.
The new £77m distribution centre in Swindon is set to create 550 jobs alongside an additional 250 jobs at B&Q\'s site in Worksop, Notts. Set to be functional from July 2011 and fully operational by January 2012 B&Q are hoping the changes will improve customer service, reduce transport costs and reduce CO2 emissions.
The breakdown of the employees affected and sites are as follow:
615 – DHL Preston Brook
24 – Kuehne and Nagel, Preston Brook
75 – Kuehne and Nagel, Chepstow
157 – Wincanton, Coventry
125 - Wincanton, Swindon
30 - Wincanton, Middleton
5 - Wincanton, Milton Keynes
With the changes coming into force from January 2012 unions have been consulted and all three companies affected are in talks with staff and say efforts will be made to redeploy them within the business.
