A crackdown by police in Northampton resulted in an alarming amount of motorists still flouting the seatbelt law.
The operation took place at the beginning of June and saw officers stopping a large number of motorists seen to be driving without wearing a seatbelt. Among the drivers stopped the biggest culprits for not wearing seatbelts were in fact van drivers, followed closely by women who will wear a seatbelt but not in the correct way.
Police Constable Dave Lee leading the operation commented:
“Van drivers are among the worst but we also have a real problem with women who tend to wear their seatbelt underneath their shoulder instead of over it as they find it uncomfortable. The higher up it is the more protection it offers. Otherwise, if there is a collision, particularly from the front, it could have deadly consequences.”
Leading van insurance broker Staveley Head would like to remind people that the law does require drivers and passengers aged 14 and over in cars, vans and other commercial vehicles to wear a seatbelt as stated on Directgov. As a driver you are also responsible for ensuring that anyone under the age of 14 wears a seat belt or uses an appropriate child restraint as required in the regulations.
PC Lee also warned of the dangers of motorists using their mobile phones whilst driving saying:
“We can be in a marked police car and come up behind or alongside someone who is on their phone and they are completely oblivious to us. They've obviously not checked their mirrors and if they haven't done that, what else are they not doing?"
