Appeal for hijacked lorry containing England kits

15 June 10

Tonight see’s BBC’s Crimewatch programme making an appeal to help track down a gang who hijacked a lorry full of England away kits in Deeside.

Based not far from Deeside in North Wales Staveley Head a leading HGV insurance broker would urge people to tune in and see if they can help catch the gang.

The lorry was hijacked on the 17th February at around 8am on Drome Road, Deeside Industrial Estate. The hooded gang of four used a shotgun to stop the heavy goods vehicle, the driver was then forced to lie down whilst the truck was driven out of the estate. The driver was then forced to wear a hood and was bundled into a black people carrier, he was released in the Wigan area at around 9am and made his way to a police station.

The burnt out lorry was later found in the St Helens area, minus its load of England away kits.

With the World Cup now well underway in South Africa, Umbro who makes the kit are urging any football fans that may be offered England away kit’s under suspicious circumstances to come forward and alert the police.

The appeal will be made tonight on BBC TV’s Crimewatch UK programme. Detective Sergeant Craig Turner leading the investigation said:

“Deeside Industrial Estate is a busy area, especially at that time of the morning, and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the vehicle or noticed anything suspicious.”

Adding:

“We are hoping the Crimewatch appeal will open up new leads. I would urge residents and anyone who works on Deeside to take the time to watch it.”
