Burglar pays the price for ten month crime spree

Netting over £120,000 of cash, jewellery and gems from people’s homes across six counties, a ‘Raffles style’ burglar who washed the dishes of the homes he burgled has been brought to justice.

Working with numerous home insurance companies, Staveley Head feel this article should remind people of the importance of securing their homes in order to protect possessions of sentimental and monetary value. The article is also a reminder of the importance of insuring your home and contents.

Having lost his job as a labourer and having a £10,000 debt to pay off, Dixon turned to a life of crime. Telling his unsuspecting fiancée who was unaware of his debt he was working long days and overtime, he was actually raiding a series of large country properties.

Timothy Hills mitigating, said his client suffered from a bipolar condition and people who knew him had told of their “surprise, amazement and shock” at what he had done. He also added that his client’s case was one of the “most bizarre multiple burglary cases” he had ever seen.

With no previous criminal history before his arrest, the 35 year olds double life is thought to have started in February last year when he bought stolen goods from a man in a pub in Bath. Telling officers he decided to cut out the middle man Dixon targeted his first home in Chilcompton, Avon, making off with £1,500 of jewellery and Marks and Spencers vouchers which finally lead to his arrest.

The 15th May saw Dixon stealing a silver diamond bracelet and an 18 carat gold ring worth £2,500 from a 17th century property in Weston High Street, Bath followed by £40,000 worth of jewellery from a home in Wincanton, Somerset.

The case held at Bristol Crown Court saw Lee Dixon jailed for five years with Judge Simon Darwell-Smith commenting:

“These were not impulsive burglaries but well thought out beforehand. You were in the main very successful and managed to sell items quickly so very little has been recovered. It's not just the value. Many items, particularly jewellery, were sentimental to their owners.”

Dixons crime spree was brought to end when he was caught using the Marks and Spencers vouchers-and officers found his fingerprints were linked to over 100 break-ins.
