250,000 tip for taxi driver

17 June 10

As a leading taxi insurance broker Staveley Head, found a recent article in the news very interesting as a taxi driver received a tip that left him able to retire.

Don Pratt a 65 year old taxi driver from Cornwall is now looking forward to retirement having been a taxi driver for 30 years. With taxi drivers pleased with most tips being the fare rounded up to the nearest pound or a ‘keep the change’ offer, Mr Pratt received a whooping £250,000!

Having spent 20 years with Mary Watson as his passenger taking her to and from her local shops in Newquay, Cornwall Pratt was astounded to hear that he had been left her entire estate, including her house and savings.

Speaking highly of Mrs Watson he said she was a nice, generous lady who was a good tipper in life.

The father of four also said:

“One day she said to me, \'When I pass on I\'ll look after you.\' I took it with a pinch of salt at the time. I had no idea she was going to leave me a fortune. When I was told she had left everything to me I just couldn't believe it. We were sad to hear she had passed but thankful she had left us this money.”

Pratt had taken Mary Watson to the shops everyday for 20 years up until a few years ago when she moved to Northampton and later went into Argyle care home where she spent the last two years of her life.

A spokeswoman from the home said:

“She didn’t have any close family to speak of. We didn’t know anything about her leaving money to the taxi driver but there was a whole side to her life we didn’t know about.

It’s a very generous thing to do and he obviously had a great impact on her life. He must have been a very good driver.”

Mr Pratt does not intend to hang up his car keys just yet he intends to travel around the UK and then venture further afield.
