Reported in the press is the news that the Government is set to review the drink driving law in a bid to drive down the amount of people who drive under the influence of alcohol.
As a leading courier insurance broker Staveley Head have a keen interest in the well being of all motorists and agree perhaps it is time for a review of the law seen as the limits were set over 40 years ago.
Offering competitive courier insurance Staveley Head would suggest for companies to be aware of any drivers they employ who have drink driving convictions as this can impact your insurance premiums.
Currently the drink drive law stands at 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, this has been the limit since the breathalyser came in to place more than 40 years ago. The new proposals could see the limit reduced from 80mg to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood as advised by Government Advisor Sir Peter North.
The reports in the press have also suggested that Sir Peter has suggested removing the right to a second breathalyser test along with random breath testing and a 20mg alcohol limit for inexperienced drivers. The Department of Transport has not confirmed whether there are going to be changes to the existing laws or not.
The UK’s largest independent road safety charity, the Institute of Advanced Motorists is backing the Governments commissioned report to reduce the drink drive limits. Neil Greig, Director of policy and research at the IAM said:
“A lower limit will hopefully make many more drivers think twice about drinking at all before getting behind the wheel. Drivers will also be more likely to get caught the morning after, but only if sufficient police are out there enforcing the law.”
If the drink driving limit is lowered to 50mg, having a single glass of wine or a pint of strong beer could put you over the limit and you could face a 12 month ban.
