Staveley Head, a leading motorcycle insurance broker reported earlier on in the month some views on the motorcycle trial which allows mopeds, scooters, motorcycles and tricycles (without a side car) to use London’s bus lanes.
With the scheme coming to an end in two weeks time Mayor of London Boris Johnson has backed a decision to authorise a second trial which once again will run for 18 months.
With the first trial coming to an end on the 5th July an independent report which compared the 28 trial lanes to 28 control sites on routes where motorcyclists did not have access to bus lanes, has thrown up a few issues.
The report according to the BBC showed a rise in accidents predominantly with cars however, there was a drop in cyclist collisions in trial lanes and motorcyclists journey times also decreased. The increase in the rate of motorcyclist collisions were mainly with cars turning into or out of side roads on the routes that had the trial in place. As a result the trial sites saw collisions rise from 30 to 41.
In light of the results, the Transport for London (TFL) have planned for the second trial to run alongside a road safety campaign aimed at raising driver’s awareness of bikers in the bus lanes.
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said:
“Motorcyclists have made a consistent case to be able to use TfL's bus lanes, and the initial trial has shown some positive results.
Adding:
“There is always scope for improvement and a new trial, with a strong focus on safety, will allow motorcyclists to show that they can adhere to the spirit of the trial and ride with respect.”
The second trial begins on 16th July and will run for 18 months.
