One in five motorists would smash and run

22 June 10

Reported in the news it appears we are a nation of not so honest motorists according to poll by a leading insurance company. The survey of 3,000 drivers revealed one in five motorists admit they would ‘do a runner’ if they accidently damaged a parked vehicle, and would not leave their details.

Around the same amount of motorists also said it would depend on the vehicle they hit as to whether or not they would leave their details. Bad news for the owners of hot hatches as these are the cars motorists are least likely to leave any contact details for in the event of a bump.

Woman fared slightly better than men when visible damage was done, with 61 per cent of woman saying they would leave details against 56 per cent of men.

As a leading fleet insurance broker Staveley Head, feel it is a shame there are so many dishonest motorists on our roads.

Out of the victims of parked car ‘hit and runs’ nine per cent called the police, around half accepted it as bad luck with one per cent having said they had sought revenge and damaged the culprits vehicle, something which is not advised.

Not only did the survey reveal motorists being dishonest when it comes to bumping a stranger’s car 15 per cent of those polled confessed that they would not own up to causing minor damage to a friend’s car whilst driving it.  Therefore perhaps we should all think twice before we offer the use of our vehicles to a friend.
