Staveley Head a leading van insurance broker is pleased to see the British Transport Police in both Wales and Scotland clamping down on drivers and pedestrians misusing railway level crossings.

Scotland will see the introduction of two vans fitted with recording equipment to capture motorists flouting rules at railway level crossings.  The footage can be downloaded and shown to drivers in a bid to educate them on the proper procedures at a crossing.

In Scotland there are 37 crossings with full barriers, 32 with partial barriers and 23 open or unmanned with only four crossings in the region having static cameras. With one van set to cover central Scotland and the other based in Inverness covering crossings in the Highlands. Inspector Bob Cameron said officers will have greater flexibility in targeting offenders.

He commented:

“For us it allows my officers to go to any crossing in the Highlands.”

To highlight the dangers of level crossings in Wales CCTV footage has been released of a woman with a pram rushing across a level crossing in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire just before a train arrives.

Based in Wales Staveley Head commends campaign officers stopping people throughout today to educate them on how to use level crossings safely in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire and across South Wales, handing out leaflets titled ‘Would it kill you to wait?’.

Pc Phil James commented:

“Around 95% of the people who are caught and prosecuted for misusing level crossings live in the local area and have used the facility many times. It is often this familiarity that causes the problem.”

The Network Rail’s 'Don’t Run the Risk' campaign coincides with an international day to highlight the dangers of people ignoring warning signs and is part of a massive safety drive.
