Free health MOT for Taxi drivers

Cabbies in Swindon are being offered a free health check in a bid to help prevent long term health problems in the future.
With long working hours and the nature of the work, taxi drivers may find themselves inactive for much of the day. Getting sick or being in ill health can often prevent taxi drivers from working and earning a living, something they will be keen to avoid.
The health check offered by NHS Swindon and Swindon Council will give taxi drivers the opportunity to have their Body Mass Index (BMI) worked out, as a number of health problems are associated with being overweight or obese. Also, taxi drivers can be tested for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and be told if they are at-risk of developing diabetes.

Cabinet Member for Housing, Community and Partnership Councillor Brian Mattock commented:
“Inequalities in health amongst residents in Swindon can be attributed to such lifestyle habits as smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise. “
“Sickness and ill health can often prevent taxi drivers from working and if they don't work, they don't earn money. The long working hours and nature of their work means they can be inactive for much of the day. “However, simple changes in lifestyle can often mean big differences to health, fitness and well being.”
Taxi drivers are invited to Swindons County ground today between 10am and 3pm for the health checks.
