Trixi mirrors trial in London

23 June 10

With safety concerns ever increasing for London cyclists, giant mirrors are set to be fixed to traffic lights on a trial bases in a bid to reduce the number of London cyclists killed by left turning vehicles.

The purpose of the mirrors is to provide a better view around HGV drivers’ vehicles and also to act as a form of advertising to remind all drivers to check their own mirrors. The message to cyclists is they should not be on the left hand side of vehicles.

With Mayor Boris Johnson’s ‘cycle superhighways’ creating direct guided routes to and from central London Nigel Hardy Transport for London’s cycle superhighways project director, said he hoped the Department of Transport would approve the installation of a significant number of mirrors in time for the launch of the superhighways.

Named after Beatrix Wilburger a Swiss cyclist who at the age of 13 was injured by a turning cement mixer, the Trixi mirrors have been promoted by her father Ulrich across the continent.  The mirrors will be tested in London for 6 months along the first of Mayor Boris Johnson’s £23 million cycle superhighways.
