Valleys infant school destroyed by fire

25 June 10

Staveley Head a leading commercial insurance broker was saddened to hear news of a fire that devastated an infant school in the Cynon Valley overnight.

The blaze which broke out just before midnight at Ynysboeth School in Mountain Ash was tackled by more than 50 firefighters with 14 fire engines and support vehicles. Within 15 minutes of the fire service being on the scene the fire had rapidly spread across the flat roof ripping through virtually every classroom and room within the school.

Incident commander Peter Jenkins from South Wales Fire Service said:

“The severity of fire prevented crews from entering the building. Efforts were made to contain the fire and stop it spreading to a nearby factory, AB Electronics, which employs a large number of people in the community.”

The school which was due to celebrate its 50th Anniversary this year is described as being totally gutted, with all that remains is a shell with just the walls of the single storey building still standing, no roof and everything inside destroyed.  All the pupils work has been destroyed and the local authority now have the challenge of deciding where to place around 100 pupils for the final few weeks of the summer term.

Terry Hooker, whose four year old daughter attended Ynysboeth School, spoke of his anguish saying:

“I'm totally devastated. You just think of all the kids' work. You just feel so sorry for them and the parents - all the photos taken when they were little, all their work, just gone.”

The parents of pupils aged between three and seven years of age have been informed that every effort will be made to ensure the pupils are kept together however, they will not know anymore of the future schooling of the children until next week.

Police crime scene investigators and fire investigators will enter the building once the scene has been completely dampened down to establish the cause of the blaze with a full investigation.
