A report published by the Department of Transport last week showed the number of casualties on our roads had fallen. The report showed a continued decrease in deaths on UK roads compared to the previous year and also suggests slight and serious injuries are steadily falling.
Broken down, the number of deaths amongst car users in 2009 was down 16 per cent on the previous year and motorcycle user fatalities dropped 4 per percent on 2008.
As a leading motorcycle insurance broker Staveley Head feel with motorcycle traffic increasing on the previous year it is encouraging to see a drop in motorcycle fatalities and injuries. However, with transport funding set to be cut by more than 25 per cent by 2014 as announced in Tuesdays budget, Brake the road safety charity are already expressing their concerns.
Ellen Booth campaign officer for brake said:
“Brake is outraged that road safety has been targeted so brutally – traffic is the biggest killer of young people and dangerous behaviour on roads causes thousands of horrific deaths and injuries of all ages every year in the UK. By targeting road safety, the government has shown they have no concern for the families of the future carnage we may see because of this irresponsible and short sighted cut of a vital life-saving service, and also no understanding of the enormous expense to the emergency services of road crashes and therefore the false economy of making these cuts.”
The statistics also revealed a reduction in pedestrian deaths with 500 reported in 2009 13 per cent less than the previous year and child casualties also fell by 6 per cent.
