A report performed by Sheffield Hallam University showed seaside resorts are still worth more than £300 million a year to the Welsh economy.
The study which looked at 121 coastal resorts in Wales and England including, Llandudno, Barry, Rhyl and Porthcawl found that despite the rise in package holidays abroad, Wales still injects millions of pounds into the economy.
Found to offer the highest number of seaside tourism jobs was the coastal strip around Llandudno, responsible for just less than 5000 jobs, followed by Tenby in Pembrokeshire with 2,500 jobs and Rhyl supporting just under 2000 positions.
Something Staveley Head,a leading caravan insurance broker found interesting in the report is the university state the seaside tourist industry employed more people than those working in the aerospace industry, motor industry, steel or pharmaceuticals.
With the industry constantly facing challenges in response to consumer tastes and economic circumstances the report from the university’s centre for regional economic and social research suggests the seaside tourist industry should not be written off just yet.
Director of the British Resorts and Destinations Association, Peter Hampson said:
“People who follow the fortunes of the British seaside tourist industry have always known it is a myth that the industry is in terminal decline, but we have not had the comprehensive and convincing evidence to prove otherwise until now.”
With some warmer weather throughout the summer months and perhaps the disruptions due to the Eyjafjallajoekull eruption and British Airways strikes, a seaside holiday or sprucing up the caravan for an adventure could be what people are preferring to do this year.
