Heavy goods vehicle drivers should be aware that police in the West Midlands are stepping it up a level and will be able to see eye to eye with HGV drivers as they take to the roads in trucks.
With patrol cars to low down to see into the cabs of HGV’s it has always been hard to catch truck drivers breaking the law. Using an unmarked truck will give the police the advantage of being on the same level as the drivers therefore they cannot only see into the cab, they can also catch any wrong doings on camera.
Gus Nairn, of Central Motorway Police Group, used to drive heavy goods vehicles and said the trucks give an “elevated position where you can see in the cab which is something you don't normally have the benefit of in a patrol car”.
A uniformed police car will follow the un-marked HGV ready to pull over any drivers their trucker colleagues may need them too.
As a leading HGV insurance broker Staveley Head agrees it makes sense to have unmarked police trucks on the road to protect everyone’s safety just as we have unmarked police cars keeping a firm eye on all other motorists.
Figures from the Department of Transport show, considering goods vehicles only account for 10 per cent of all motorway traffic they are involved in just under a third of all collisions. Hopefully, the presence of the police trucks could help to drive down the number of collisions.
