Safety group names Britains most dangerous roads

In the press is a report by the Road Safety Foundation entitled ‘Saving Lives for Less’, which has covered 28,000 miles of motorways and A-roads revealing Scotland as having the highest risk highways, followed by parts of Northern England.

The aim of the charities findings is to target the Governments spending to help improve safety on the most dangerous roads in Britain. The Road Safety Foundation is suggesting the high costs of the emergency services could possibly be cut by spending small sums in accident blackspots.

Dr Joanne Hill Foundation Director said:

“Not only can Britain reduce road deaths and serious injuries but, by targeting a relatively small mileage of high-risk roads, we can do so with good economic returns.

Too often we pay for emergency services, hospitals and care for the disabled rather than taking easy steps to put road design faults right.”

With one tenth of Britain’s roads seeing half of all fatal road crashes,  Staveley Head a leading motorcycle insurance broker asks the question “reducing road deaths and injuries should be a high priority and if the Road Safety Foundation think they can do this whilst cutting costs, what are we waiting for?”

The report highlighted a number of issues such as a third of fatal and serious crashes happen at junctions, with one-in-four fatal or serious crashes on A-roads or motorways involving a motorcyclist.

The most dangerous road was identified as the A537 between Macclesfield, Cheshire and Buxton, Derbyshire followed by the A5012 Pikehall to Matlock. The most improved road was named as the A40 between Llandovery and Carmarthen seeing a large decrease in fatal or serious incidents.
