One in five young drivers race on public roads

Research by road safety charity Brake and FedEx Express has recently been published in a bid to curb youngsters speeding on our roads today.

A survey was carried out using anonymous questionnaires as part of the 2young2die campaign. Over 2,800 14-25 year olds in colleges and schools took part throughout the UK and the results discovered some shocking results.

One in five young people have raced on a public road as passenger or driver, with 58 per cent of passengers in a speeding car admitting to not asking the driver to slow down, finding it hard to speak out or not perceiving the risk. The survey also revealed 10 per cent of young people have overtaken, at speed without a clear view of the road ahead.

Brake also reported that road crashes are the biggest killer of people aged 15-24, with an incredible 43 per cent of people who die on the roads in crashes involving speed, being aged between 16 and 25.

Ellen Booth Brakes campaign officer said:

“Many young people get a thrill from driving fast with their friends in the car, but because of the way young people’s brains develop, they often don’t yet have the ability to control their thrill-seeking tendencies. They often feel invincible and over-estimate their power to get out of trouble. Brake is urging the government to take steps now to stop more families suffering the devastation of the death of a teenager”.

One of the steps Brake is calling for is for the Government to introduce Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) which allows drivers to build up their driving skills and experience gradually. According to Brake GDL has been shown to reduce casualties among young people in countries such as New Zealand.

GDL is supported by the Association of British Insurers and as a leading car insurance broker Staveley Head agrees this could be a step in the right direction, alongside Brakes other plans of introducing compulsory education in schools warning of the dangers of speeding and other forms of high-risk driving.

Staveley Head is a leading provider of Car Insurance in the UK.
