As a leading horse box insurance broker based in Wales Staveley Head, read in the press that it is not just Llanwrtyd Wells in Mid Wales that has played host to a man versus horse race this year.
The man versus horse race in Wales has taken place year after year following a chat over a drink discussing the relative merits of men and horses in 1980. The conversation was overhead by the then landlord Gordon Green who decided to put man versus horse to the test in a bid to promote Llanwrtyd Wells and improve business to his hotel, the Neuadd Arms Hotel. It has been a tradition ever since.
With event organisers hoping to attract a new breed of racegoers to future race fixtures, last night saw a £10,000 prize up for grabs as human went up against equine in a one hundred metre race, at Kempton Park race course in London.
The event saw Welshman and Olympic silver medallist James Baulch go head to head with thoroughbred Peopleton Brook, with the delighted crowd seeing Peopleton Brook beat his human rival by a slim half a second. The slightly disappointed 37 year old said:
‘He absolutely flew past me. After about 60 metres I just heard this thundering noise behind me.
I thought: "My god, it's the horse" and I knew that was it. I had no chance.’
After his victory the 16 hands high superfast thoroughbred’s owners graciously split the £10,000 prize money between their charities, the injured Jockeys Fund and Mr Baulch’s cause, Barnardo’s the children’s charity.
