Summer crackdown on drink, drugs and driving

05 July 10

Police in Scotland caught over 8,500 people last year driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs which has sparked a mass crackdown. With the World Cup and many summer festivals in full swing increased patrols throughout Scotland’s eight force areas will target drink and drug drivers in a two week operation.

To coincide with the final stages of the World Cup, the Open Golf Championship at St Andrews, T in the park at Balado and the Scottish Open Golf Championship at Loch Lomond, the two week crackdown has massive consequences for any motorists driving whilst under the influence.

Disqualified drivers from last year’s initiative could see their vehicles crushed if they are found driving under the influence again. Drivers who choose to risk their own safety as well as others by driving whilst intoxicated by alcohol or drugs face losing their licence with an automatic 12 month ban. They also potentially risk being fined up to £5,000 and will end up with a criminal record for a minimum of 20 years.

As a leading van insurance broker Staveley Head would urge members of the public to not only adhere to drink driving and drug laws but to also alert the local police or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if they suspect anyone of drug or drink driving.

Head of road policing for the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (Acpos) Chief Constable Kevin Smith said:

“From the 5th of July, we will be increasing our road patrols as we begin our annual summer campaign targeting those who continue to drive under the influence of drink or drugs.

“I hope that this year we will see a vast reduction in the number of people being caught for this dangerous crime.

“My message is clear; driving under the influence of drink or drugs is irresponsible and risks lives.

“If we catch you we'll take away your licence. If we catch you again we can take away your car.”
