As one of the UK’s leading taxi insurance intermediaries Staveley Head, are always interested in any news relating to the taxi business.
Reported in the press today is the news that the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust has come under fire after it has been revealed they have blown a transport budget by almost £1 million.
Andrew RT Davies, Shadow Minister for Health said:
“To hear there has been a million-pound overspend is of deep concern when valuable resources have to be protected. On the surface it seems a considerable sum of money and if there is already a service in place then I would suggest you should be using your own resources before you are spending it on third party operators.”
It is reported the trust has spent £3.4 million on taxis in the past five years, with the last financial year alone seeing the trust pay out more than £517,507 on taxi cabs used to transport non-emergency patients to and from their hospital appointments. Last year’s taxi costs averaged £1,417 a day which was just £120,000 less than it spent buying 27 new ambulance and patient transport vehicles.
The news comes after a publication of a review that called for drastic improvements to be made to non-emergency patients transport services in Wales. Peter Black, health spokesman and assembly member for South Wales West commented on the review:
“I am obviously concerned that the Welsh Ambulance Service are not getting value for money out of their vehicles, they are using a very expensive form of transport [taxis], when if they invested in their own vehicles they would get better value for money.”
