Hire car headache

13 July 10

Research from Kwik-Fit has highlighted a few issues we seem to be having when hiring a car, other than just arranging the initial hire. The study of 2,000 people revealed one third of adults who have hired a car said they struggled with a number of basic operations.

Top of the list of difficulties appears to be the petrol cap, with a massive 47 per cent of people struggling to open it. Other hire car headaches involved problems with operating mirrors and windows, working the in-car entertainment and finding the lights. 18 per cent of people had trouble starting the car and 4 per cent admitted to not being able to even get into the car, failing to unlock the doors.

As a leading fleet insurance broker Staveley Head think perhaps hire car companies could be doing a little more to ensure people know a few basics of the vehicle they are hiring.

It appears the age of motorists also plays a big part in how baffled people are by the basics of hire vehicles. Most people would guess younger drivers would be more familiar with the modern technology in hire vehicles than their older counterparts however, the poll revealed a staggering 48 per cent of 18-34 year olds have had difficulties with their hire vehicle compared to 27 per cent of 35-64 year olds. Even those over 65 years of age fared better with only 33 per cent encountering problems.

Ian Fraser Kwik-Fit’s chief executive said:

“The controls in a car can differ hugely from one manufacturer to another - and sometimes even between models of the same manufacturer.”
