A recent survey by a leading car insurer has raised concerns over the safety of motorists after a poll found London to be the UK’s motoring fine capital.
According to Esure’s survey an average of £680 is being paid by drivers in London for road offences in a lifetime. North East England’s motorists came second in the poll with £352 offences paid, followed by those in the South East paying £303.
The survey of 1,107 not only revealed the difference in fines paid throughout the UK it also showed the difference between the fines men and women pay. Women motorists on average pay £210 compared with their male counterpart’s figure of £344.
Speeding and illegal parking generated the most fines with the poll showing 36 per cent of people admit to deliberately breaking the rules and 34 per cent being confused about parking rules and regulations.
As a leading provider of bus insurance Staveley Head, were surprised at the number of motorists who actually admit to disobeying the rules of the road, this is a concern as offences such as speeding put all road users safety at risk.
Head of risk and underwriting at Esure car insurance, Mike Pickard said:
“Owning and running a car in the UK can be very costly, particularly with rising fuel costs, and avoidable charges for driving offences only make this more expensive. “
Adding:
“Offences such as speeding and using a mobile phone while driving not only add points to a motorist's driving licence but are deemed offences for a reason.“
