Staveley Head a leading provider of van insurance reported earlier on in the month of a crack down on motorists drinking and driving under the influence of drink or drugs in Scotland, in the news today is an update on the first week’s findings.
Since the 5th July, the summer crackdown which coincided with the World Cup final, T in the park at Baldo and a number of golf tournaments, a total of 96 motorists have been stopped for offences. This figure is down in comparison to the same period last year which saw 122 motorists committing offences.
Out of the 96 motorists stopped for offences four of them were repeat offenders from the previous year. The courts will now decide on whether to seize the motorist’s vehicles after it was reported vehicles could be crushed if a driver is a repeat offender.
Among the motorists caught allegedly under the influence of drink or drugs whilst driving was a 33 year old man who crashed into a road works vehicle with flashing lights on, and a 48 year old male driver who was stopped as a result of a motorist calling 999 and alerting to police to the drivers erratic driving.
Chief Superintendent Brian Anderson, of Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary, who leads on drink and drug driving for Acpos, said:
“One encouraging fact which has been noted is the support from members of the public, who are reporting suspect offenders to the police.
“Figures were collated this year as to how these offences are reported, and over a fifth of all persons charged were detected as a result of a member of the public contacting the police.”
