Storm conditions in Wales

19 July 10

As a leading caravan insurance broker based in North Wales, Staveley Head has seen a big change in the weather over the past week. Reported in the press is news of damage done as a storm hit the North West Wales coast battering Anglesey and Gwynedd.

Along the Gwynedd coast, winds of up to 84mph were reported causing boats to break free from moorings.  Richard Workman, the manager of the Shell Island campsite near Harlech in Gwynedd, said it was the highest tide he’d ever seen in July. Commenting:

“It was more like the storms you usually see in December.

Seven boats had broken free from their moorings, although only one was damaged, other property was damaged however and 95% of campers left during the night”

Anglesey also took quite a battering with one yacht capsizing after it struck the Four Mile Bridge breaking its mast and causing traffic chaos on the bridge. Scottish Power customers were also affected with 1,500 of them left without electricity. A spokesman for Scottish Power said:

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused, but the weather has been very difficult.”

A number of people commented on the BBC news website describing awnings being ripped from caravans and reports of it being the worst weather caravan enthusiast had ever seen there.
