As a leading courier insurance broker Staveley Head, would warn motorists of parking on an industrial estate previously investigated by BBC’s Watchdog programme, to be aware.

It appears rouge clampers are causing havoc on an industrial estate in Ipswich, Suffolk with one courier having to fork out over £1,000.

Driver David Wood said he was hit with £1,180 for leaving his van for a matter of minutes, whilst making a delivery. The 45 year old courier told the Daily Express that there was no room on the forecourt so he parked his van on the road, grabbed the package and made his delivery.

On returning to the van Mr Wood was greeted by four burley men in stab proof vests, and his vehicle clamped.

He said:

“They told me I had to pay £1,180 to get the clamp removed. I was staggered but I had dozens more deliveries so I had no choice.

“The clampers were very intimidating. They said if I didn’t like it I could appeal and told me to look up the details on the internet.

“I had to pay there and then with my credit card. They put it through a hand-held machine and gave me a print-out and another piece of paper.”

It is claimed the clamping firm Citywatch Parking Enforcement collected an estimated £5,000 from motorists before lunch time last Monday.

Earlier on in the year the Labour Government pushed through legislation to tackle the issue of clamping however, according to the Daily Mail the Home Office yesterday admitted it was unlikely that the measures will be introduced until next year.
