The first lorry heading for Wellingborough, carrying a load of coffee was stopped by UK Border Agency Officers around 7-15am on 7th July. Highly trained sniffer dogs alerted the officers to a man and woman from Vietnam hiding in the trailer.
Three days later on the 10th July officers found three Eritrean men hiding among a load of watermelons in a HGV heading for Corby. They were discovered after offices noticed the vehicles trailer had not been secured correctly.
Carole Upshall, the UK Border Agency's director for European Operations, said:
“Finds such as this one highlight the determination and expertise required by UK Border Agency officers to stay one step ahead of illegal immigration. In 2009 we stopped over 29,000 individual attempts to cross the channel illegally and searched over one million freight vehicles.
“The UK Border Agency's strong presence at the frontier, not only in the UK but also in northern France, helps protect the whole country from people illegally entering the UK and then heading for towns and cities across Britain – in this case Wellingborough and Corby.”
The HGV drivers were allowed to continue on their journey however, they could face fines if they cannot prove they took steps to secure their vehicles properly. The five stowaways were handed over to the police.
