As a leading taxi insurance broker Staveley Head can understand how competitive the taxi trade can be. With all taxi drivers out there trying to earn a living it is disappointing to read an article in the press on a taxi driver who not only plied for trade, he was also driving without taxi insurance.
Steven Lal, a Wolverhampton taxi driver for approximately seven years had been plying for hire in Walsall town centre. Representing himself in court Lal apologised for taking trade away from Hackney carriages and said he thought he would get a “decent fare” by plying for trade.
Already having nine penalty points on his licence, the 42 year old appealed to the court to not issue him with a ban as he would have to find another job which would cause him “exceptional hardship”.
Mr Lal was banned under the totting up procedure and ordered to pay a total of £781.21. Broken down he was ordered to pay £100 for having no insurance, £666.21 prosecution costs and a £15 victim surcharge fee. There was no separate penalty for the plying for hire offence.
