Two wheeled fire-fighters

A six month pilot scheme begins next month seeing the introduction of two wheeled fire fighting vehicles. The streets of Liverpool will see fire-fighting motorbikes complete with their own pumps, tackling the city on a trial run beginning in August.

The city see’s more than 8,000 anti-social fires such as bin and rubbish fires and bonfires each year. The two motorbikes costing £30,000 are set to combat these fires which would otherwise need a conventional fire engine to attend.

As a leading motorbike insurance broker Staveley Head, feel the motorbikes can only be a fantastic addition to the fire service.

The high-performance police version of the BMW R 1200 RT, are equipped with radical new technology masterminded by Danish firm Firexpress. Each bike holds 50 litres of water mixed with a foaming chemical and has a range of 11m.

The motorbikes are not just capable of tackling rubbish fires, they are capable of putting out burning cars, with two cars being put out in two minutes.

Group manager John McCormack, who is in charge of the project, told the Liverpool ECHO:

“We already had one motorbike working in the service across the city centre.

“That came about during the Big Dig, when most of the city centre was dug up, and one of our officers asked why we were sending big red fire appliances   through all this to attend what we already knew were automatic false fire alarms.

“He could get there on a bike before the appliance had left the station.

“That was when we started looking at what other uses motorbikes could have, which are seen all over the world.”

Mr McCormack insisted the motorbikes will not be replacing the £225,000 fire engines. They will be there to assist in combating anti-social fires and automated fire alarms, the two biggest work streams.
