Sting on red diesel thieves

28 July 10

Staveley Head a leading van insurance broker reported earlier on in the month a crackdown of illegal fuel use on vehicles leaving and entering Holyhead port. Reported in this week’s press is another clampdown this time in East and Midlothian.

A recent spate of red diesel thefts in the area had an operation set up by officers from the force's road policing unit and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HRMC) fuel testers. The operation ran from 7pm on Thursday until 3am on Friday morning.

The total number of vehicles stopped for inspection was 40, all of which had their fuel tanks dipped to check for stolen red diesel.

A 36 year old van driver from Prestonpans in East Lothian was found to have the tank of his white Ford Transit van filled with diesel. The van has been seized and the driver was issued with an £800 fine as part of the joint campaign by customs officers and the police.

Inspector Fraser Jervis, in charge of road policing for East Lothian and Midlothian, said:

"These vehicle inspections were not a one-off and those who continue to steal red diesel will also have their vehicles seized and issued with a hefty fine."
