100k reward to catch Liverpool Dock thieves

29 July 10

A substantial reward is being offered after a robbery from a Liverpool warehouse during the May bank holiday weekend.

The warehouse in Huskisson Dock had millions-of-pounds worth of copper and nickel stolen, with thieves using two lorries and trailers to load the hundreds of tones of metal onto. Due to the substantial value of the metal a £100,000 reward has been offered.

As a leading HGV insurance broker Staveley Head, think the thieves must be a pretty clued up gang to know how they were going to distribute the load. They must also of had the skills and ability to drive two heavy goods vehicles.

Due to the load being so huge detectives believe the burglars must have returned numerous times over the course of a few hours to steal the metal sheets. It is also thought the load will be split up into smaller quantities and transported around the UK, were industrial smelting facilities will be used to change the appearance of the metal or reduce it down further.

Detective Inspector Heslop said:

“This was a well-organised burglary involving a gang of offenders who must have had knowledge of what was in this particular warehouse and how to get it out undetected.

“High-grade copper and nickel is an incredibly valuable commodity and its worth is reflected by the substantial reward the company is offering.

“It is often imported and used by large companies to trade on the London Metal Exchange.”
