Having taken over responsibility of enforcing parking restrictions in Cardiff from the 5th July, it is reported in the press that Cardiff Council could be set to collect as much as £4.5 million in parking fines in a year.
Apparently 2,384 penalty charges have been issued from the 5th July at a cost of £50 or £70 each. This figure was given to Councillor Richard Cook as he wanted to know where the 52 new officers were concentrating their efforts.
It was revealed that the bulk of the tickets 1,339 were issued in Cathays ward, which includes Cardiff City Centre, followed by Plasnewydd and Riverside.
It is predicted that if officers continue to issue tickets at the current pace there will be an increase of 39% on the total amount issued last year.
Steve Gifford, a delivery driver with Juven couriers, said:
“You used to be able to just jump out for two minutes, make your deliveries and go, but now drivers are being told if they get out of their vehicles, they’ll get a ticket. At least traffic wardens understood that everyone’s got a job to do. The number of tickets issued in two weeks shows they are not showing any discretion.”

A spokesman from Cardiff Council said at this time it is not possible to calculate how much has been collected in fines as some will still be un paid.
