Take care on the roads this summer

30 July 10

The summer holidays are finally upon us and many people are planning what to do during the holidays. The Highways agency have issued a press release for those who are thinking of going away in their caravan, thinking of towing their boat or horse box.

Repeatedly in the press Staveley Head a leading caravan insurance broker see reports of towed vehicles such as caravans involved in incidents. Some of which cause death and serious injury, along with major hold ups for all road users even for the most minor accident.

The Highways Agency uses examples such as an overturned caravan on the M60 with no other vehicles involved causing tailbacks which took more than an hour to clear, even though Highways Agency Traffic Officers were quickly on scene. Specialist equipment also had to be called to the scene to remove the caravan. Another incident on the M5 near Bristol saw an overturned caravan close three of four lanes for more than two hours causing huge delays.

According to the Highways Agency a number of towing incidents are avoidable as they include things such as burst tyres due to them not being checked before the journey, overloading and poor towing techniques from the driver.

Highways Agency Director of Traffic Management, Simon Sheldon-Wilson, said:

“While the majority of towed vehicles travel safely, recent incidents provide a timely reminder to anyone towing a trailer, boat, caravan or horse box this summer to prepare before they set out and take a few simple steps once they are out on the road to avoid becoming involved in an incident. So check your tyres, make sure that caravans and trailers are not overloaded and drive carefully and considerately at this busy time of year in the holiday season.”

Advice from the Highways Agency includes carrying out a final maintenance check before setting off. Also drivers should be aware that driving with a loaded trailer will inevitably affect the vehicle's performance, anyone towing should also make sure they are adequately covered for recovery and breakdown.
