There are many benefits of owning your own motorhome, from travelling across the country at the drop of a hat to the convenience of living home from home taking all your essentials with you.

If you, like many others, are drawn into the idyllic prospect of owning a motorhome then we can help!

For most, the research involved will normally include the type of models available and the campsites to visit, leaving out important added expenses that are incurred.

We’ve put together a list of the expenses, you may or may not know, come with owning your very own motorhome.

Initial purchase cost

While the initial purchase cost of your motorhome may appear expensive in comparison to a last minute excursion to Europe, it will, in the long run, prove more cost effective. Throughout the years, those cheap last minute holidays will begin to add up, while your motorhome can be utilised as many times as you want with no further costs.

The cost of a motorhome can vary due to your individual needs, but remember, you don’t need to buy new. The second-hand motorhome market will let you live out your motorhome dream at a fraction of the price with models available for as little as £2000.

When buying second hand, do ensure you complete all the essential checks including engine, mileage, the underneath of the vehicle and its overall internal and external appearance.

Insurance

Once you have found your perfect motorhome your next point of call will be insurance. Finding the right cover will ensure your vehicle is fully protected and you can enjoy yourself without the worry. Types of motorhome insurance include:

  • Comprehensive
  • Third party, fire and theft
  • Laid up cover

Taking out optional extra motorhome insurance coverage, such as breakdown cover, legal assistance cover, excess protection and motorhome travel insurance will give you that extra peace of mind that your motorhome is fully protected in all circumstances.

Servicing

You should have your motorhome vehicle serviced annually to ensure it is safe on the roads in all weather conditions. Servicing costs for motorhomes will likely cost around £250 per year.

Fuel economy

There are many factors that will determine how fuel efficient a motorhome is, including the age, make, model and road type of the vehicle. It’s suggested a smaller motorhome will likely get around 35mpg however, the bigger the vehicle the more expensive the cost becomes.

When making the decision to purchase your new motorhome all factors should be considered to give you a better understanding of the overall annual expense, leaving you able to plan your first trip without being stung by unexpected costs.
