Overview

Business Insurance

Finding the right insurance is a top priority for every successful, growing business. After all the blood, sweat and tears you’ve put into getting your business up and running, it’s vital to make sure all that time and effort is protected if unexpected problems arise.

We’ve been working in the insurance business for over a decade, so we understand and appreciate the challenges you face every day. This is why our specialist team of brokers partner with leading UK insurers to provide you with the options you need, whatever your business, whatever your size.

What Is Business Insurance?

Business insurance protects against losses suffered in the course of a business’ normal activities. There are always risks involved in running a business, which is why having the correct insurance policy in place is essential.

With us, you can get a truly tailored policy. We’ll build it piece by piece to target the risks you face.

From liability cover for injuries or accidents that occur on the premises, damage to your business’s property, and loss of income due to unexpected events, we’ll use these building blocks craft a policy unique to your business.

Is It Compulsory To Have Commercial Liability Insurance?

It’s a legal requirement to have an employer’s liability insurance policy if you run a business with employees.

Although public and product liability insurance covers are not compulsory, you’ll usually find that any principal you contract to will insist on a minimum level of cover to fulfil your contract conditions.

Even if that’s not the case, it is often better to err on the side of caution and have this cover so you can avoid having to pay massive amounts of compensation.

What Does Business Insurance Cover?

The extent of your business insurance will differ based on the cover you need and your insurer. Below are some of the most common types of coverage that businesses need:

  • Building Structure: This covers the physical structure of the commercial building, encompassing walls, roof, floors, and foundations. Protection is usually provided against risks like fire, explosion, storm damage, vandalism, and, if opted for, accidental damage.
  • Contents: This coverage encompasses contents and assets within the building, such as equipment, machinery, furniture, inventory, and stock. This coverage safeguards against risks such as theft, damage, or loss due to covered perils.
  • Business Interruption: This covers the process of recuperating lost income and managing ongoing expenses if the commercial building becomes uninhabitable or temporarily unusable. The cause would need to be an ‘insurable event’, such as a fire or natural disaster. It can help compensate for lost profits, fixed expenses, and additional costs incurred during the interruption.
  • Liability: Commercial building insurance often incorporates public liability coverage. It shields the business against claims from third parties for injury or property damage on the premises. This coverage can aid in covering legal fees, compensation claims, and related expenses.

Your Policy Unpacked

What Coverage Do You Need?

Your coverage will vary depending on your policy needs. Here are just some of the many options available from our insurers:

What we can cover you for:

  • Employer's and public liability coverage to protect your business from claims made by the public and employees.

  • Coverage for product liability in the event of harm caused by what you manufacture or sell.

  • Damage and loss of essential equipment for your business operations.

  • Coverage for stock kept on premises up to a specified amount - some policies can include frozen food.

  • Fixtures and fittings damaged accidentally by commercial tenants and their clients.

  • Loss of rent while the building is occupied by a tenant.

What’s not included:

  • Damage as a result of gradual wear and tear due to lack of maintenance by the commercial landlord.

  • Any loss or damage occurring before the start of your policy.

  • If cleaning products or dye cause damage to your commercial property this is not covered.

When running a business, there are many uncertainties and risks. Business insurance acts as a safety net, protecting you financially if things go wrong.

For example, if your business premises suffer fire or flood damage without any insurance cover, you could face hefty repair or replacement costs. Similarly, if someone were to get injured on your property or if you accidentally damage someone else’s property in the course of your business activities, the legal and compensation costs could be significant without insurance coverage.

The protection and peace of mind that business insurance provides can be invaluable for safeguarding your investment and ensuring the long-term success of your business.

When you’re running a business from home, it’s easy to think you’re covered by your regular home insurance.

Home and business insurance policies will vary depending on your insurer, so we always recommend double-checking your policy schedule to see what you’re covered for. However, you might need additional business insurance cover for full protection.

If your insurer has not been made aware that you’re operating a business from home, this can even invalidate your home insurance – meaning you wouldn’t be covered for any future claims.

Keep in mind that if you have specific stock or specialist equipment to run your business from home, your home insurance may not be able to stretch far enough in the event of a claim.

The same can be said if you’re a tenant working from home and your landlord has buy-to-let insurance. It’s worth considering that you may need commercial insurance for stock and contents.

If you meet and greet customers at your home for work — for example, if you’re a hairdresser or a dog groomer— you will need liability insurance in case an injury occurs.

If you’re already renting a space for your business and do not own it, then you won’t need a policy with building cover for the premises.

However, that doesn’t mean you don’t need business insurance. Your inventory, fixtures, and equipment still need to be protected in case of damage, theft, or loss. Plus if you have staff or work with members of the public, you’ll need a policy with liability insurance.

Luckily, we can find a policy to suit you. We can tailor your business insurance to focus more on cover for contents and employers’ and public liability.
