Overview

Home Insurance

Your home is where you feel most relaxed and comfortable, which is why finding the right insurance cover to protect it is essential.

With over a decade of experience in insurance, our friendly team of experts can compare policies and guide you every step towards getting your home insured in minutes.

What Is Home Insurance?

Your house is more than just your home sweet home, it’s the investment you want to protect after all the hassle of climbing up the property ladder.

Home insurance protects your property and the belongings inside against damages or losses. Some policies can also provide liability coverage if accidents occur on home premises.

Why Do I Need Home Insurance?

Even though it is not a legal requirement, it’s always best to have home insurance for peace of mind, just in case a problem arises. Your mortgage lender might even insist that you get home insurance as a condition of the loan, to further protect their investment in the property.

The right home insurance cover can provide temporary repairs to prevent the worst case scenario, as well as protect both the structure of your home and it’s contents from accidental damage. This is why it is important to carefully review the terms of a home insurance policy to understand the types of events, damages, contents and structure are covered.

Your cover will vary depending on your insurer, policy, and property. For example, home emergency cover, also known as home emergency assistance, is a common add-on applied to home insurance to cover more emergency issues that affect your home to prevent further damage. Usually policies with home emergency focus on unexpected issues that need to sorted immediately, such as plumbing blockages, flooded drains and heating failure.

Some policies also cover the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home if it is damaged or destroyed by a covered event, such as a fire or natural disaster. Some types of cover can also include the replacement of your personal belongings if they are lost, stolen, or damaged.

Do You Need Home Insurance When Renting?

Building insurance will almost always be your landlord’s responsibility if you’re renting a home.

Of course, you’ll be expected to look after your rental property. However, essential maintenance is  your landlord’s responsibility. This also means that your landlord must ensure the property is protected against any damage resulting from events like storms, flooding, or fire with buy-to-let insurance.

Even though home insurance isn’t compulsory if you rent, there is still an argument for having some contents cover in place to protect your belongings. A good home contents insurance policy will cover your possessions and what’s covered depends on the coverage you opt for. Home contents can cover furniture, gadgets, jewellery, and much more, if there’s a break-in or if they’re damaged in a disaster like a flood or a fire.

What Coverage Do You Need?

Your coverage will vary depending on your policy needs. Here are just some of the many options available from our insurers:

What we can cover you for:

  • Protection against damage caused by fire, smoke, explosion, lightning, flooding, or earthquake occurrences.

  • Accidental damage coverage to building and contents.

  • Building cover is provided for instances of subsidence and landslip.

  • Contents are safeguarded against damage from falling trees and branches.

  • Structural damage resulting from emergency access by authorities and public services is also covered.

  • Home emergency cover encompasses urgent call-outs that require immediate action to prevent damage and restore mains services.

What’s not included:

  • Damage resulting from neglect, gradual degradation, dampness, rot, or vermin is not covered.

  • Deliberate homeowner or resident vandalism is excluded.

  • Acts of terrorism leading to pollution or contamination are excluded.

  • Damage from tobacco burns or non-fire-related heat distortion is not covered.

  • Loss or damage during home unoccupancy for over 60 consecutive days is not covered.

  • Contents damaged during the moving-in process are not covered.

If an electrical fault in your home’s wiring occurs as a result of an insurable event, it may be covered depending on your policy.

It’s always best to mention if there is a specific part of your home you want to cover during the property insurance application process. This is just to ensure that our team can keep it in mind when tracking down a suitable policy for your home.

It depends on the contents coverage in your policy and what has caused the damage.

For example, some home contents coverage may include some kitchen fixtures if they’re damaged as a result of an insurable event, such as fire or flood.

However, the exclusions and extent of the coverage will vary depending on your policy and insurer.
