With so many things to consider buying your first car can be a challenge. To start with what is your budget, who should you buy from, what are the extra costs? There are so many questions!

Just remember it’s your first car and you probably will scratch it (even if it’s just the alloys)! You’re best to buy a used car. And you’ll love it just the same, as it’s your first taste of freedom.

One of the first things to consider is your car insurance; this will help narrow your search. Cars in a lower insurance group are your best bet with smaller engines and light weight. A useful way to find out a cars insurance group is with this tool.

There’s also the tax which is dependent on the engine size, fuel type or CO2 emissions. Before you purchase a car take a look at the tax bracket using the gov.uk website.

There’s a lot to consider, so to help you here are a few cars that are perfect for new drivers:

Firstly there’s the Ford Fiesta a modern look 3 door hatchback, this car is reliable and has an engine size of 1.25. Depending on mileage you can pick a 2003 LX up for approx. £1,000 which falls into insurance group 3. Plus this car has excellent fuel economy.

Owning a Vauxhall Corsa makes economical sense which is why it is one of the best selling cars in the UK. For first time drivers the 1.0 litre 2006 model can be bought for around £3,000 and falls into insurance group 1. Older versions of the Corsa can also be reliable so don’t be put off by the number plate.

A Toyota Yaris 1.0 WT-i is a good first car with low running costs, falling into insurance group 1. Purchasing a 2006 will cost you around £2,300 but this is a first car that will last you many years.

If a Toyota Yaris will last you many years a Volkswagen will last you a lifetime, one of the most reliable cars on the market. The Polo has been described as a smaller version of a VW Golf with great safety features it falls into insurance group 2 and is a great purchase for any first time driver.
